Linux for i586

Powered by: SourceForge.net Logo

Before you ask, 'zold' is the Hungarian word for 'green'. Think of this as an effort to recycle old PCs instead of throwing them on a waste dump. :)
The Zold PC project is to create a linux distribution for old i586 PCs with up to date software.

Currently the target system has :

133-200Mhz processor
1 or 2 Mb Video RAM
32-64 Mb system RAM
500Mb - 1.2Gb Hard Drive

The current release is in very early alpha stage. It is based on Linux from Scratch 5.1.1. The links to sources for the packages can be found there!

The build PC was a 2.6Ghz system, so i used the crosscompiling-x86 hint from lfs hints and to speed up the compilation I used the parallelcompiling hint from the same site.

Features:

Kernel: Linux-2.4.24
glibc-2.3.3-lfs51
xorg-6.8.1
coplete list of installed packages in 0.1-alpha: here

Installing:

The current release is not intended for end users. Currently there is no installer at all. Installing requires knowledge of creating a new partition, modifing the boot loader, and not destroying your current system. ;)
Download the iso file, and burn it on a CD, (or mount it wit loop back). The iso contains a big tar file, which is the system it self. You must figure out how will you copy the contetnt of this tar, to the target computer. You must edit the /etc/fstab to fit your setup.
You should have at least 500Mb + swap. This may change in the future. Hopefuly it will be less. :)

Download:

Download the iso from sourceforge.
